THE HAZEL TREE
The Hazel Tree & The Salmon of Knowledge
In Irish mythology, few stories captivate the imagination quite like that of the Salmon of Knowledge and its connection to the sacred Hazel tree.
At the heart of the story lies Fionn Mac Cumhaill, a legendary figure who embarks on a quest for enlightenment. His journey leads him to the mystical Salmon of Knowledge.
According to the ancient Irish legend, a Hazel Tree bent its branches over the Well of Wisdom. Nine hazel nuts fell into the water and were eaten by the salmon.
Fionn was tasked with cooking it by a wise druid named Finegas who had been trying to catch the salmon for years. While cooking the fish, Fionn accidentally burns his thumb on its skin and puts his thumb in his mouth, gaining the salmon's wisdom.
The salmon's wisdom was connected to the Hazel tree symbolising wisdom, intuition and enlightenment.
Fionn learned that wisdom isn't just for himself, it's meant to be shared. So he shared his newfound knowledge with others, enriching their lives too.
The moral? In our own journeys we should seek wisdom, be patient and appreciate the wisdom found in nature. And most importantly we should share what we learn with others, making our world a little brighter.
